A Modern Keeping Room That's a Real Keeper...
Traditionally known as a “Keeping Room”, a family kitchen was created for this home that seamlessly incorporates kitchen, dining and family space into one functional and comfortable space. When the homeowners bought the house their real estate agent pointed out the possibility of making a larger kitchen in what was then a screened-in porch at the back of the house. The reality, however, was that the porch did not have footings to sustain that direct transition. Instead we built a proper addition to accommodate the new kitchen. We used the old kitchen space to create an informal eating area, and a mud room and powder room that are conveniently located between the family space and direct access to the exterior via the garage entry. The old dining room and powder room space was utilized to give an extra four feet of space to the formal dining room. The request for the kitchen was to make it functional for multiple cooks, and to create an area dedicated to baking. Three work stations were developed: cooking (with two actual cooking locations - one surface is gas and one is electric), cleaning (island), and food storage (Cherry wood armoire). The area between the food storage and double ovens is devoted to baking.
This lovely new home is situated in a unique New Jersey community tucked alongside the Hudson River. Its special location overlooking one of the most famous waterways in the world, inspired the “Mariner” theme of the home. In it you will find artistic glass detailing and tilework reminiscent of flowing water, doors designed to include the look of a porthole …and this master bath suite that welcomes all of the magnificent outdoors in! The bathroom includes two glass walls to maximize the view over the river towards the George Washington Bridge. Rustic slate tile flows from the shower into the room with a curb-less entry and circular gold colored decorative tiles on the walls continue the Mariner’s theme.
“Quiet Elegance” is the theme of this kitchen in a newly constructed Craftsman style home. The look was inspired by the ambiance of the “Low Country”, a color palette popular in the Outerbanks of the Southeast USA. The design brings together the warmth of two distinct tones of wood and the cool of simple lines juxtaposed with the strategic use of stainless steel. Large scale detailing on the corners of the island and dramatic stone tops add a subtle artistic flair that brings both balance and interest to the large space. And finally, the overall layout provides for an easy flow of traffic and functional workstations that easily accommodate a busy family of 6!
